Pool Sand Filters

What is the Best Sand Filter for Your Pool?

If you have budget constraints and want low maintenance requirements, a sand filter is your best option. Sand filters are generally also the pool filters of choice for large pools, as they don’t clog as quickly.

A sand filter consists of a tank typically filled with silica sand, zelbrite or glass.

The best sand filters are the ones from Zodiac, Pentair, Davey, Poolrite, and Hayward.

How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Sand Filter?

Your sand filler should include a pressure gauge that alerts you when the internal pressure of the filter increases. When this happens, you have to backwash the filter, which involves reversing the water flow and flushing all debris.

We recommend backwashing every four weeks in summer and six to eight in winter.

What Size Sand Filter Do I Need for an Inground Pool?

The size of your sand filter depends on your pump:

-              ¾ HP pumps work best with 20-inch filters

-              1 HP pumps work best with 25-inch filters

-              1.5 HP pumps work best with 28-inch filters

-              2 HP pumps work best with 31-inch filters

The above is a rough guide. Variables like pumping distance and secondary applications (like water features and heating) can mean you may need a larger pump then the guide shows.
